As I drove home along the banks of Loch Ness on the 26th December the first quarter of the waxing moon rose up behind Urquart Castle….and with it my muses went into overdrive. “What you should make is a Full Moon Mala on every Full Moon as we journey through 2018!” they said “Ooooo and a mala for the Dark/New Moon….ooooo and a Crescent Moon Mala too!!!”. I did swear at them! But, that’s it…the seed was sown! Beads got ordered, a list and design ideas scribbled down, photographs of the Full Moon taken etc etc Whats a girl supposed to do when your muses shout at you like that!?! Anyways…that was the sowing of the seed.
A few years ago when I was working with my reprousse pewter art pieces and I created a round canvas piece for each Full Moon. So I dug out my designs and notes for that. I love how different traditions have different names for the Full Moons and I’ve worked with those a lot over my Pagan years. The difference is I want to create these pieces with whats going on around our British Isles, on its Land, in its waters and upon the wing. So I appreciate some of my names for the moons might not be too familiar to you but I really want to capture whats happening around me….although I do have some favourites Wolf Moon being one of them and the first one in this Luna Cycle I have journeyed with.
Wolf Moon – January Full Moon
My first offering upon this Luna Pathway is ‘Wolf Moon’.
This first Full Moon of the year is often called the Wolf Moon. Other names also include Old Moon, Ice Moon, and Snow Moon, which for our first proper winter in The Highlands its certainly been a Snow and Ice Moon.
While the almanac states that Wolf Moon is a Native American name, other sources claim that it has Anglo-Saxon origins. In Anglo-Saxon culture, the January Full Moon was also called the Moon after Yule, which is the time of the ancient festival celebrating the Winter Solstice around December 21st/22nd.
During the wolves den-ing season in spring and early summer, wolves only howl to pack mates. As the late summer moves towards autumn, wolves call more and more to neighbours and enemies. Wolves are particularly loud and vocal in the first months of the year, often due to very lean prey times but also because breeding season starts in January and February and folk would hear them more. So it’s probably why people associated the month of January with howling wolves.
I do love creating Malas carrying Wolf energy. Its a very strong silent energy and often helps create an inner strength in the person working with Wolf. Whilst we journey from Yule to Imbolc it can often be a depressing or challenging time for some, so by working with the energy of Wolf it can bring some resistance to those energies.
Luna Essence Creation
As I make this journey with the Luna Cycle I’m also photographing each Full Moon and creating Luna Essence and Essence Sprays to harness those energies further.
I’m always happy to wax lyrical about these things…but I’m not very good at writing them down. So I really hope to keep this blog going forward. I feel it’ll be a vital tool to explaining my Magical Mala work further and giving you a more in-depth information about the Malas I create and why.
Happy Luna Journeying!
